As a patient, we expect you’ll have many questions about the treatment, and one that we often hear is: ‘how long do fillers actually last?’. The truth is there’s no definitive answer to this question, and at Takroni Clinic we can only give you an approximate duration.
Why is this?
Dermal fillers contain a biodegradable product which means it will naturally break down and the particles will absorb into the body after a certain amount of time. Your particular skin type and its quality can determine the rate at which fillers will break down, which can vary from another person. Your health and lifestyle choices are also taken into account. At Takroni Clinic we discuss your reasons for requesting dermal fillers and assess your area(s) of concern, which will establish the type of filler we’ll look to administer. Takroni Clinic uses branded fillers that are globally renowned. These products are more durable as they contain better quality ingredients that are manufactured to a high standard; factors that help to ensure the filler will last longer than cheaper brands available on the market.
Fillers that are used to create more volume for thin lips and less defined cheeks are usually of a higher density. They are generally applied deeper into the skin, which may mean they can last longer – although this is not guaranteed. Fillers of a lower density are often used to smooth the skin and soften fine lines. They are usually applied to skin layers that are closer to the surface, and are often made up of a high concentration of Hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is naturally produced by the skin and, as well as controlling hydration, contributes to the volume within the tissue structure. By increasing moisture levels within the skin it can help in kick-starting the production of new collagen which decompounds at your own rate – and creates a more natural looking result.
So, what is the general duration of dermal fillers?
After taking into account all the factors involved in the placement of fillers, our experts turn their attention to the duration of treatment. With any filler we typically expect you to start to notice volume loss at around 6 months after treatment – although the breakdown process may have already begun. This may not happen for 9 months with some people, or maybe even 12 or 18 months for others. As qualified and highly trained practitioners we can make accurate predictions to the time the product will generally last before volume loss is expected, according to the factors mentioned above.
As dermal fillers are a temporary product, we will often recommend repeating the treatment to maintain volume in the skin, and so you can enjoy the results for longer. This is outlined in your personalised treatment plan, and may be suggested any time between 6 and 18 months.
Is there anything that can help to increase the longevity of dermal fillers?
Dermal filler treatments are often part of a wider plan. There are many other things that we would recommend when caring for your complexion so it remains in good condition – which is also helpful in reducing the effects of ageing. The use of a good skincare regime includes moisturising the skin, and keeping the complexion hydrated can support the effects of HA-based fillers – we also recommend drinking plenty of water everyday.
Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid deplete by way of the ageing process which is why the skin becomes thin, wrinkled and saggy in appearance. This process can be accelerated by stress, smoking, sun exposure and alcohol. As dermal fillers will not prevent the ageing process, or stop it in its tracks, we advise you to avoid these accelerations if you want to prolong the results.
